Programme Notes for

 ‘Mavrud III’  

Mavrud III is based on the North Indian rãg Dipak, whose character is fire. The relationship is not strict in detail, but overall the traditional form is followed. The opening is a free exploration of the  

notes. Section A introduces some rhythm, and sections B to F consist of repeats of the same rhythmic cycle (of Carnatic character) a total of 18 times. Thus it is important from B to F to preserve the tempo relationships between sections so that each cycle is the same length (24 secs or close to that).

We are all climbing a mountain, holding a candle, which sheds some light in the  

darkness around us. Some flames burn bright and clear; others gutter. The lights 

of others can look apt to be followed, but this is an illusion; only our own light  

will show us our way.

'Trialogue' is een muzikale impressie van een avond waarop twee vrouwen een hen onbekende reiziger meenemen  voor een overnachting en bestaat uit 6 delen: 
 
1. Boulevard
2. ‘Hotel de la Gare’?
3. Ce Soir
4. l’Histoire
5. Boudoir
6. Au Revoir

   

Trialogue is geschreven in een vrije atonale en polyfone stijl, d.w.z. dat de thema’s en lijnen
opgebouwd zijn uit vrij geselecteerd chromatisch tonenmateriaal en dat de drie afzonderlijke
stemmen zoveel mogelijk zelfstandig zijn. Tegelijkertijd is er gestreefd naar heldere 
melodieën en welluidende samenklanken.
